German Mills

German Mills is at the south end of Markham, neighboring Hillcrest village community of North York. It is easier to associate the community's name with its rich history and many German descents. Today German Mills is a tight-knit community with a diversified population.

Community Overview

The community of German Mills runs from German Mill Creek on the west to Steeles Avenue in the south, Highway 404 on the east, and the railway north of John Street. The green space covers almost a third of the community's land area. While residents can enjoy many outdoor activities in local parks and hiking trails, the community is family oriented and offers entry-level homeownership opportunities.

1. Housing:

The real estate in German Mills Markham is mixed primarily with Detached and Link Houses. Many detached homes sit on a general lot with a larger front, while link homes are most three to four bedrooms with a single garage. There are also small numbers of freehold townhomes and condo apartments located at the northwest corner of John and Leslie Street. Home buyers also can find many traditional condo townhouses, mainly along highway 404 and south west corner of German Mills. Many German Mill residential real estate was developed between the 1960s and 1980s. Homeownership in this community is very high, with around 85% of owners occupying their homes.

From MLS listings, in the past 90 days, German Mills Markham sold 4 detached houses on average of $1,751,200; 5 Attached town home, Semi-detached and Link houses on average of $1,347,778; 5 Town homes on average of $1,076,100.

2. Demographic:

Despite the community name, the major ethnic group here is now Chinese, English, Iranian, and a small number of Korean and Indian.

3. Transportation:

Though it is neighbor to Toronto City, most residents here have their cars to travel. It takes 5 mins to drive to the entry of highway 404 or express tollway 407. Excellent Public transit is available throughout the community. Buses on both Don Mills Road and Steeles link up to Toronto Subway station, which connects to the central transit system to downtown Toronto.

4. Recreation:

German Mill Settlers Park is famous for its hiking loop trail, which takes one around half an hour to complete. The year-round open park offers a natural environment for relaxation and outdoor activities for biking, jogging, bird sighting, and river viewing. Other community parks, including Simonston Park, Paddock Park, and Bishops Cross Park, provide amenities such as Soccer fields, Tennis courts, Basketball Courts, baseball fields, and Kids' Playgrounds.

5. Shopping:

Restaurants, banks, and many shops are concentrated at Shops On Steeles & 404 Mall. The supermarket is on the east side of the mall. A neighborhood plaza with some fast food restaurants and service shops is close to the condo apartment on the north.

6. Schools:

German Mills Public School is the principal elementary school serving the community. It is one of the top 10% of elementary schools across Ontario. North John street, the neighborhood is zoned for Bayview Glen Public School, ranked number 70 out of over three thousand primary schools by Fraser Institute. Established in 1968, Thornlea Secondary school accepts students from German Mill. The generations of outstanding teachers have accumulated rich experience in education and teaching in the past 50 years, which is an intangible asset of the school. Thornlea school ranks top 10% across Ontario High Schools.
